Things to check.
- Make sure the smart chip on the ribbon (like phone sim card) is not bent out of position as it needs to make a good contact with the contact point in the printer (marked below in photo).
- power the machine off, remove the ribbon and rub the smart card contact point ( below marked in photo) with a lint free cloth (eg spontex or microfibre cloth)
- The contact block is spring loaded and it can get stuck out of alignment on an old machine. Once cleaned re-insert the ribbon and power the unit back on.
- Check zebra ribbon part code is correct type for printer model
